Have you met Alan ? These people have...

My name is Jack Shilley, I am 14 years old and I met Alan at the Chelsea Flower Show 2009 on press day. I was representing Ranelagh School and we had a small garden in the Grand Pavillion which I was able to show Alan. He was really friendly and enthusiastic about our school garden.

I had the pleasure of meeting Alan again later on in the week and even doing an interview. Again Alan was very friendly and I presented him with a Ranelagh School tie and made him an honorary member of our gardening club.

I would like to say a big thank-you to Alan for making my visit to the Chelsea Flower Show extra special and have sent a picture of myself with Alan.

Alan and Jack at Chelsea 09

Sue Carberry from Epsom has met Alan : "I met Alan for the first time at Wisley in April 09, although I've been a fan for years. During the evening I was struck by his warmth, he has charisma in buckets! I queued to get my newly purchased book signed and, when it was my turn, I also gave him a birthday card, two weeks in advance!

He was genuinely surprised and touched. He squeezed my arm and said 'Bless you, luv!' It was a lovely moment but now I have to go around the allotment touching people's plants with my left hand and say 'Grow you bugger, grow!' What will I do if they don't ? !"

Read Sue's review of Up The Garden Path - A Musical Review by Kit and The Widow (And AT of course!)

Charlotte Hornsby emailed us to say : "I have a wonderful photo of my son Blake with his natural history hero! When he met Alan at last years Gardeners World Live he asked if he was sick when he flew with the RAF in a Hawk for his programme 'British Isles'. Alan told him he was but it was well worth it as the flight was amazing. Thank you Alan for making Blake's day. My four year old daughter Willow now wants to meet you!

Hilary Connell had a great time too : "
I've been to two book signings to see Alan. My first was 6 years ago at Cadbury Garden Centre Bristol, and again this year at the same place in April.  Alan was very friendly and charming - I only hope that I will be able to meet him again soon."

Susan Vinther from Denmark emailed to say: "I just wish to say Happy Birthday to Alan on his 60th birthday on May 2. I have met him once at Gardener's World Live in 2003, where he very kindly signed one of his books, chatted a bit and gave me a kiss on the cheek. Made my day! I'm really looking forward to seeing him at Chelsea this year, I can't wait"!

Maureen Davies met Alan at the Trafford Centre in Manchester. "I went to Waterstones to get my book signed by Alan. I stood there like a big dumb lemon about two feet away as I was really concious of not invading his personal space! I wish now I'd given him a big kiss. This is a photo of us together !"

Jenny from Farnham writes : "I've been to two book signings to see Alan - my first 7 years ago at Forest Lodge, Farnham and both times Alan was very friendly and charming. I only wish I wasn't as shy as I am, and that I could have spoken more - I would have told him Gardeners World isn't the same without him!"

I have been to see Alan on numerous occasions, from booksignings to 'An Evening with....' and do you know what? He always comes over as if you are the only person in the queue, never mind there may be at least 70 more behind you!!"

Emma from Coventry agrees : "I have met Alan on many occasions. Ever time he has been so down to earth. I buy him socks every time that I have met him and on every occasions he always remembers. He makes you feel that you have known him years and that you are an old friend. He is wonderful!!"

Karen McKinney from Seaham said "I am a big fan of Alan's. I gave him a  chocolate plaque with his name on  when I went to a book signing in Darlington. He gave me a lovely kiss on the cheek and I nearly fainted Such a lovely man - Mrs. T is a very lucky lady. Gardeners World is not the same without him and I hope to meet him again soon!".

Lisa Earley from Congresbury emailed us to say : "I met Alan at Cadbury Garden Centre in April he was really nice and I had this super picture taken with him . What a nice man. I am a great fan of his and I also love gardening !"

Bridget Skinner met Alan at the Bedgebury Pinetum and writes :
"I had a fantastic walk round the collection and an opportunity to meet Alan who was very charming. I was a student at the time and it was nice to have some encouragement with my endeavours in horticulture."

Aline Sommerville emailed to say : "I met Alan at GW Live in Birmingham in 2004 and again in Glasgow and Ayr at booksignings and like all the other ladies' comments I found him so friendly and charming. Happy 60th Birthday Alan, you look great and after all it is only a number! Have a wonderful day."

Cheryl Brown met Alan in Bury St. Edmonds : "I've met Alan twice at
book signings in Bury. He always makes you feel like you are the only one there to see him, no matter how many are behind you. The first time I took all my copies of his books for him to sign and he didn't mind one bit. I told him I thought a good subject for a book would be school dinner ladies whose school burns down as that happened to us!!!"

Bryan James emailed from Woking in Surrey : "I briefly met Alan at a book signing at RHS Wisley Gardens. Alan made the whole evening great fun (as well as educational) and although the queue afterwards was long, time passed rather quickly and even towards the end Alan was as fresh and cheerful as ever."

Tracy McClaughlin added : "I used to live in Windsor and met Alan there. I now live in Saltash, Cornwall and he's never down this way! Please do - we love you here too" I wrote to Alan a few years back when I had to go to Germany with my husband who's in the forces and I had to give up my lovely garden. Alan wrote a lovely note back. Well now I have a wonderful little garden in Cornwall and it was featured on Gardeners World recently, so thank you Alan for all the advice and laughs".

Santosh from Harrow even got to go on holiday with Alan.. "
My husband and I met Alan whilst cruising on the river Danube in May 09. He and his wife are really very nice."

Lynne Matthews from Sutton-in-Ashfield emailed to say : "I met Alan a couple of years ago at a book signing in Chesterfield. I told him I didnt know whether to laugh or cry so he put his arm around me! My husband knows he is my second choice as man in my life! "

Alan's biggest fan ?

Donna Hendrie from Hinkley, Leics.
Donna writes "I just thought I would join the many and attach my pictures of meeting my hero Alan!

I first met him in 2005 at Gardeners' World Live.  What a thrill to meet him!  So warm and kind!
The list then goes on and on!  In june 2006 I had to chase after him (like some madwoman) as he was on his way to do a talk, and, bless him, he didn't disappoint, he stopped just to have a picture taken with me on route!

In 2007 I met him again at GW Live, almost in a state of swooning over him, I dared to ask for a kiss!  I was fit to burst as he obliged!  I must say, my work colleagues think it's hilarious that I absolutely fall to pieces when I meet him, they are convinced that I am an 'AT' stalker and that he must think 'my goodness it's that mad blonde woman again!!!'  It's all lighthearted banter that makes us laugh!

The last time I met him was at a booksigning at Leicester last year, again, I was in bits, he was wonderful, warm, kind and amusing and surely he must by now think I am a madwoman!!!!

I miss him on Gardeners' World, however, thanks to the powers that be that gave him his own show, it's fab!  It brightens up my day!  I even recorded every episode whilst I was on Holiday for two weeks in Mexico!  (Much to my Husbands annoyance!)

What an amazing Fella!  I just love him!!!!"
